Supplemental Zinc Boosts Cognitive Performance of Middle Schoolers

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 05, 2005 - Dietary zinc supplementation (20 mg daily) may help seventh graders perform better in school, according to results of a study reported Monday during the American Society of Nutritional Sciences, part of Experimental Biology 2005 underway in San Diego.
In a 10-week study of 209 seventh graders who were not zinc deficient, those who consumed 4 ounces of fruit juice supplemented with 20 mg of zinc gluconate daily cut their reaction time on a visual memory test by 12% compared with 6% (p<0.002) for students who received a placebo.
They also had more correct answers on a word recognition test (9% vs. 3%; p<0.008) and had better scores on a task requiring sustained attention and vigilance (6% vs. 1%; p<0.03).
However, test performance did not improve significantly in students who consumed 10 mg supplemental zinc daily, the current RDA for this age group.
If confirmed, these results may help fuel a review of recommended zinc intake guidelines for adolescents, Dr. James G. Penland from the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center in North Dakota noted in a telephone interview with Reuters Health.
It's important to remember that these results were achieved in a group of adolescents who were not zinc deficient, he emphasized. "So if we could see benefits from slightly increasing zinc intake in that group it bodes well for what we might find with a zinc deficient population," he said.
"Zinc supplementation has been shown to be related to motor, cognitive, and psychosocial function in older women and young children in the first and second grade, but this is the first study of its effects in adolescents," Dr. Penland also pointed out.
"Adolescence is a critical period of rapid growth physically, emotionally, and mentally. That coupled with the fact that zinc is one of the nutrients that adolescents do not consume in recommended amounts led us to this study," he added.
